ETH huffers are in a panic again as yet another bug was discovered in geth, the bug-riddled version of the protocol written in Golang. (archived) The most recent discovery causes geth nodes running out of memory and crash on block 2283416. No fix was offered at this time, and developers said it will be necessary to use another implementation until geth is repaired. Prices had dropped 1.30% on the news, according to coinmarketap.com

Social Engineering Bests Self Describe Securitist
An Austrian "cybersecurity researcher" was educated in the finer points of social engineering, after falling victim to a teenage redditard's Bitcoin scam. Christian Haschek agreed to give the kid $500 in Apple iTunes gift cards in exchange for nonexistent Bitcoin. Despite being a blogger on the subject of insecurity, Mr. Haschek never asked his attacker for a signed message to prove the existence of funds or his identity in the WOT. (archived) After having his identity traced through facebook, the stolen money was returned.
These lulz follow other not-quite-newsworthy trends this week, such as the arrest of 2 youths accused of social engineering their way into accounts of high-ranking U.S. intelligence officials. (archived)
BitcoinTalk Database In The Wild For Some Time Now, New Forum Software Years Late
A database containing over a half-million usernames and passwords of Bitcointalk users is being sold by a vendor. The breach actually occurred in May of 2015 through a social engineering attack, and the vendor shared a portion of the database with HackRead.com. The database contains a total of 514,408 accounts and the vendor indicated that decrypting the database's sha-256 password encryption was relatively easy using standard brute-force methods. Bitcointalk administrator Thermos (WOT:theymos) has promised an upgraded forum software, dubbed EpochTalk, since 2014 but as yet has not delivered on his promise despite spending in excess of $500,000 USD in donations from the community. Parasitic Flatworm Named To Honor Hussein Bahamas
In a twist of irony surely not lost to Qntra readers, US president Hussein Bahamas now has the honor of a newly discovered parasitic flatworm named after him. The two-inch long parasite, dubbed "Baracktrema obamai" lives in turtles blood and was discovered by Thomas Platt, a retired biology professor at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana. Professor Platt assured the public that bestowing the name was not meant as an insult, but rather meant to honor the current president. However, Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a parasite as " something that resembles a biological parasite in dependence on something else for existence or support without making a useful or adequate return" which accurately describes the legacy left by Bahamas during his eight-year tenure.
Well Fargo Fined Over Non-Consensual Account Openings
Infamous fiat institution Wells Fargo bank has been fined over $100 million USD by The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for "the widespread illegal practice of secretly opening unauthorized deposit and credit card accounts." The bank stands accused of allowing thousands of employees to open more than 2 million unauthorized deposit and credit accounts in secret, in order to hit sales targets, according to investigators. Fines and penalties imposed in the case total $185 million USD, with an additional $5 million being required to be paid as restitution to affected customers. Wells Fargo officials said managers and employees involved in the scheme had been fired, and that $2.6 million dollars in customer fees collected as a result of the deceptive activities has been refunded. Wells Fargo & Co is the fourth largest U.S. bank by assets, and the U.S. Treasury still holds warrants to buy about 110 million shares related to the 2008 financial crisis and bailout.
Past Dropbox Use Casts Spectre
A hack that occurred nearly four years ago is coming back to haunt Dropbox, with the data now appearing for sale on a darknet marketplace. Dropbox only announced the breach last week, notifying the affected users that the company would be resetting their passwords. The data reportedly includes the email addresses and hashed passwords that were obtained in the 2012 hack, which Dropbox officials blamed on an employee's reused password. The vendor is offering the trove for a mere 2 BTC making it likely that many of salted and hashed passwords have not yet been decrypted. Either that or after the Peace trove, passwords are cheap. California Plans Anti-Cattle Legislation
California lawmakers are targeting cows in their latest front on "Global Warming". Democratic Senator Ricardo Lara, author of the legislation, blames bovine flatulence and manure for producing copious amounts of methane emissions and seeks to send current levels to 40 percent below their 2013 levels by the year 2030. Senate Republicans mostly opposed the measure, which passed near the end of the legislative session Wednesday in Sacramento, claiming it will harm local dairy businesses and cause increased milk prices.
Nothing Self Actualizes: Zapchain
$350,000 more in VC monies was flushed down the toilet Monday, as Social network Zapchain announced it was shutting down it's services August 21. Startup accelerator Boost VC launched the server less than a year ago and joins failed spam tipping service ChangeTip on the list of Bitcoin services no one really wants or needs. Zapchain company officials had not commented to press on the announcement, though Coindesk expressed hope was being placed on social ponzi experiment Steem to fill the gap. Bitfinex said customers could learn more about this new type of suppository on the BnkToTheFuture blog (archived). Sorry for your loss.

Noodle Bricks Overtaking Smokes As US Prison Currency Standard
According to a recent report by Michael Gibson-Light, doctoral student at the University of Arizona’s school of sociology, the ubiquitous Ramen noodle pack is fast replacing tobacco as the currency of choice amongst US prisoners. Gibson-Light conducted the study over the course of a year while conducting research for another project, and attributes the rise in value being due to substandard nutrition that inmates are now receiving due to budget cuts in prisons nationwide. Inmates often exchange the soup packs, which cost less than $1 in prison commissaries, for items of much higher value. In the prison where the study was conducted, one pack could fetch an inmate 5 handmade cigarettes worth approximately $2, and other assorted sundries were often valued in soup packs. Other inmates used ramen to pay for such services as laundry or cell-cleaning. Violence has been known to erupt over ramen bought on credit when the noodly debts went too long unpaid. Mr Gibson-Light concluded the study by stating that "The shift from tobacco to ramen highlights how dire the nutritional standards at prisons has become." Gresham's Law bitch! Sorry for your loss.
