Silk Road Meth Dealer Pleads Guilty

A drug dealer who sold 17.6 pounds of methamphetamine totalling 3169 orders via the original Silk Road today plead guilty for his role in what was a four man operation.

Jason Weld Hagen, who went by the name hammertime on the SR, was arrested back in December of 2013 and originally plead not guilty. Hammertime's operation came unstuck after another man who was facing drugs charges agreed to cooperate with law enforcement. With that assistance, federal agents in Maryland ordered 17.5g of meth over the December 2012 to January 2013 period. Continue reading

Excoin Exchange To Shut Down Amid Claims Of Theft

The altcoin exchange Excoin has announced that it will soon shut down after alleging that an attacker was able to withdraw all the bitcoins from the exchange.

With a trading engine written in Go, Excoin launched what was predominantly a Blackcoin exchange back in November of 2014. Excoin also featured a proof of reserve page which reassured members that their funds were securely stored and accounted for. Continue reading

Quebec Regulator: Bitcoin Businesses Need A Licence

Operators of Bitcoin ATMs and exchanges in the province of the "economic shithole" known as Quebec, Canada must now obtain a licence from the Autorité des marchés financiers after amendments were made by the AMF to the Policy Statement to the Money Services Business Act.

The requirement of a licence now means that businesses operating Bitcoin ATMs and exchanges in Quebec will now be obligated to keep a record of financial transactions in addition to verifying the identity of customers. Continue reading

Hong Kong Monetary Authority Uses MyCoin.hk Debacle To Troll Consumers

Amid the confusion over whether MyCoin.hk ever held any bitcoin and in what amount or if it was as it appears to be an elaborate ponzi scheme dressed up in non-existent bitcoins, flash cars and cash prizes, Reuters reports that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority has seized upon the uncertainty to warn consumers of the dangers of Bitcoin.
