Intel CFO George Davis announced at a conference hosted by Morgan Stanley that the USG chip maker would remain behind its competitors on process node size until shipping 7nm parts near the end of 2021 (archived). Samsung and TMSC have been shipping parts with a 7nm process since 2018. Intel has been having trouble keeping up with shrinking node sizes for some years now and further suffered the loss of their performance lead as the optimizations that lead was built on constantly require mitigation.
