Andreas Schildbach Releases 4.0 Version of Bitcoin Wallet for Android

Early this morning Andreas Schildbach released version 4.o of his "Bitcoin Wallet" for Android devices and announced the release on his Google Plus page. Commonly referred to simply as the Schildbach Wallet, the software operates as a Simplified Payment Verification client which utilizes the bitcoinj1 library.

Changes that users considering the new version should consider:

  • The software has moved to deterministic wallets generated from a single seed.
  • Because of the move to a deterministic wallet, the software discourages address reuse " The app does its best to not reuse addresses any more. "Request coins" will use a fresh address on each invocation. The current address in the QR code on the main page changes as soon as coins are received on it." This is notable as the combination of address reuse and poor Android random number generation lead to a major security vulnerability last year, where the private keys for addresses which has spent coins multiple times had become solvable.
  • The transaction fee solver shows the fee to be paid for a transaction as you type.
  • The New version of Android Wallet only works on Android version 4.0.3 and later.
  • There is finally a translation for Norwegian BokmÃ¥l.

  1. The library bitcoinj is principally maintained by Mike Hearn, a controversial figure for his tendency to attempt pushing breaking changes into Bitcoin software.
